Description
This opportunity provides funding to eligible U.S. state, territorial, and local government entities, or their bona fide agents, to operate and modernize the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS). The NVDRS is the CDC’s state-based surveillance system that compiles data from death certificates, coroner or medical examiner reports (including toxicology), and law enforcement reports to deliver comprehensive, incident-level data on violent deaths and suicides.
The primary goals of this program are to:
- Support timely and complete data reporting through quarterly provisional data pulls and annual data closeout processes.
- Modernize data systems and workflows to improve efficiency, data quality, timeliness, and usability.
- Conduct modernization readiness assessments and pilot at least one modernization activity (e.g., automated data import, electronic data exchange, workflow automation, or enhanced analysis/visualization).
- Optionally, link NVDRS data with other relevant data systems to enhance surveillance and public health insights.
The intended outcome is a sustainable, modernized surveillance system providing high-quality, timely data to inform violence and suicide prevention and support public health action.
