The American Alpine Club established the Momentum Grant in 2026 in partnership with Austin Mallet’s family. Created in memory of Mallet, who died in an avalanche in 2024, the program supports climbers seeking to develop their skills and mountain craft through ambitious objectives close to home.
The grant funds intermediate to advanced alpine projects in North America, including establishing new lines and repeating major routes. Technical ice, mixed, rock, and ski-alpinist objectives receive priority. Projects should represent a logical progression in the applicant’s climbing career—a personal step up in skills, experience, ambition, or destination. The selection working group also seeks variety among supported project types and locations.
