Description
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources administers Motorized Stewardship funding for projects that sustain public ATV, UTV and snowmobile recreation. Its priorities are major bridge reconstruction or rehabilitation, rehabilitation of funded trails that benefits motorized users, and new bridges on existing funded trails. Eligible work also includes ATV/UTV maps, fee-simple land acquisition and support facilities such as trailheads, restrooms and warming houses.
The program favors lasting improvements over routine upkeep or development of new trails. For snowmobile recreation, the broader goal is a statewide system of well-signed, well-groomed trails for public use and enjoyment. The DNR program page says Motorized Stewardship closed to new applicants on July 1, 2021, although it continues to publish an annual application deadline. Prospective new applicants should ask the grant manager whether they can be considered.
