Summary: A one-year congressional fellowship for scientists and engineers to apply optical and materials science expertise to U.S. public policy.
Key Information: Applicants must have a PhD by the fellowship’s start and verified authorization to work in the United States.
Jointly sponsored by the Materials Research Society (MRS) and Optica, this fellowship provides scientists and engineers with a year of firsthand public policy experience in Washington, D.C. Fellows serve as special legislative assistants to a member of Congress or a congressional committee. Their work may include legislative and oversight activities, support for hearings and debates, preparation of briefs, and speechwriting. The program promotes the effective use of optical and materials science knowledge in government and strengthens communication between scientific communities and policymakers.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) administers orientation on congressional and executive branch operations and guides the congressional placement process. Fellows then interview with congressional offices to secure their placement. AAAS also provides a year-long seminar series on science and public policy.
