You can now apply for one of three $1,200 travel awards (previously one $1,000 award): applications open October 12, 2026, and close November 1, with an information webinar on October 19. Use the dedicated Endowment Awards application and prepare a one-page research description, advisor confirmation of graduate standing and your fund selections; you must be a current SFS student member. Check the new restrictions before applying: only one Endowment Award per degree program and one award per award year, and no Endowment Award alongside a Graduate Conservation Research Award in the same year.

Description
The Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) administers the Mulholland Fund for Biogeochemical Research through its competitive Endowment Awards program. Established in honor of Patrick (Pat) Mulholland, the fund helps students studying stream biogeochemistry participate in the Society’s Annual Meeting and present their work to the freshwater science community.
Despite its research-focused name, the fund supports meeting travel rather than the costs of conducting a research project. Award funds must support the recipient’s travel to attend and present at the SFS Annual Meeting. The broader Endowment Awards program supports student research and travel, with awards based on research merit.
