Description
The Municipal Road Safety (MRS) Grant Program is administered by the Massachusetts Office of Grants and Research (OGR), the State Administering Agency for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) traffic safety grants. This competitive program supports data-driven, evidence-based projects that supplement municipal police departments’ existing road safety efforts.
Departments may combine targeted overtime enforcement, traffic equipment, pedestrian and bicyclist safety initiatives, community education, and specialized officer training. Proposed activities must connect local crash data and trends to planned activities and expected outcomes. OGR particularly encourages non-enforcement strategies that improve road user behavior, alongside traditional enforcement. The program also emphasizes racial equity and reaching underserved communities disproportionately affected by traffic crashes.
