The Native American Scholars Initiative (NASI) Summer Undergraduate Internship provides three undergraduates with hands-on archival research experience at the American Philosophical Society’s Library & Museum in Philadelphia. Supported by a Mellon Foundation grant, the eight-week paid residential program combines research, mentorship, networking, and exploration of careers in archives and special collections and advanced training in Native American and Indigenous Studies and related fields.
Working with mentors, interns develop their own archives-based projects or pursue research identified by Indigenous communities collaborating with the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR). The APS collections contain materials related to more than 650 Indigenous cultures throughout the Americas. Interns join other scholars and undergraduate interns, share their work with varied audiences, and develop skills in peer support, collaboration, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
