The National GEM Consortium’s MS Engineering and Science Fellowship Program connects graduate education with practical experience at leading engineering and science employers nationwide. It promotes the value of a master’s degree in industry and supports pathways into research and development, product development, and other high-level technical careers, while also exposing fellows to academic opportunities. GEM’s broader mission is to increase participation of underrepresented groups in graduate engineering and science.
The program combines a portable academic-year fellowship at a participating GEM Member University with employer-sponsored summer work. During internships, an experienced engineer or scientist provides individual supervision and guidance, and GEM seeks to match fellows’ research interests with company needs. Member universities provide academic support and tuition coverage, while employers offer practical assignments that complement graduate study.
