Summary: KIC supports South Africa-based researchers’ scientific travel, events and exchanges to strengthen research expertise and international collaboration.
Key Information: Only one activity per applicant is supported, and applicants cannot receive support in consecutive calls.
The National Research Foundation’s Knowledge, Interchange and Collaboration (KIC) programme supports scientific exchange to build and maintain excellence in South African research. It aims to internationalise research platforms, strengthen global scientific networks—particularly within Africa—and foster collaboration that improves research outputs.
Support covers individual participation in scientific events, hosting foreign research leaders, interaction with African research partners, and organising scientific events in South Africa. Activities include conferences, workshops, seminars, poster and oral presentations, and virtual or hybrid participation. Priority goes to researchers without travel support through another NRF grant. Individual travel funding also prioritises emerging researchers.
