The National Research Foundation (NRF), with support from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), offers competitive, once-off Research Development Grants for Y-Rated Researchers. The programme primarily supports basic research in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, including self-initiated ideas, national strategic initiatives and work drawing on South Africa’s geographic advantages.
The grants help emerging researchers strengthen their research portfolios and progress towards established researcher status while developing associated human capacity. The programme seeks world-class research, knowledge production, and advances in paradigms, theories and methods. Funding decisions emphasise scientific merit, sound methodology, achievable aims and project feasibility. Research agendas should also consider inclusive growth and job creation, poverty and living costs, and a capable, ethical and developmental state.
