Description
Administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund helps state and eligible local units of government acquire land or rights in land and develop public outdoor recreation facilities. Acquisition projects can protect land valued for its environmental importance or scenic beauty; development projects can create or renovate facilities such as trails, boating access, campgrounds and playgrounds.
The fund’s goals are to protect significant natural resources and expand public access to outdoor recreation. Applications are evaluated in part on natural resource access and conservation, proximity to population centers, committed match and financial need. Board priorities include trails, regionally significant projects, lake and river access, wildlife habitat and hunting access. The Trust Fund Board recommends projects to the Legislature for final approval.
