Description
The Transportation Research Board’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) manages this research project on how organizational systems, leadership practices, and working conditions influence state department of transportation (DOT) employee safety. The work addresses persistent injuries, lost time, limited work capability, property damage, and operational disruption despite investments in safety policies, training, compliance programs, and safety management systems.
The research will develop a guide identifying proven and noteworthy approaches, practices, and interventions that promote safer employee behavior and decision-making, including accountability at all levels. It will also produce a strategic plan to address gaps in knowledge about DOT safety programs and interventions. The emphasis is on practical interventions that support safer choices without relying solely on training, communication, compliance, or disciplinary approaches.
