The award honors early-career scholars for exceptional research that advances understanding in English or language arts education. Established by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Committee on Research, it highlights significant scholarly work that interrogates inequalities, explores literacy practices among marginalized youth, and seeks to transform educational practice through rigorous inquiry. The competition welcomes manuscripts employing recognized research methodologies and contributing new insights into language development, literature, composition, teacher education, linguistics, and related areas.
