Description
This program provides competitive fellowships to individual scholars pursuing projects that embody exceptional humanistic research, rigorous analysis, and clear writing. The fellowship offers recipients the opportunity to devote six to twelve months to research and writing, supporting the production of books, monographs, peer-reviewed articles, e-books, digital resources, translations with annotations or a critical apparatus, or critical editions resulting from previous research. Projects may be at any stage of development.
The program welcomes applications from scholars in all humanities disciplines, including independent and early-career researchers. Digital projects and born-digital resources are eligible and encouraged.

Application Process

- Prepare all required documents, including project narrative, CV, and work plan.

- You will receive confirmation emails at each stage of the submission process.
- Letters of recommendation:
- NEH will request letters of reference from your recommenders about 7–10 days after the deadline. You are responsible for ensuring your recommenders submit their letters.

Additional Information
- The Fellowships for Digital Publication program is now integrated into this fellowship; digital and born-digital projects are welcome.
- NEH will only make payments to personal bank accounts (not institutional accounts) for awards issued after August 2024.
- All awards issued on or after October 1, 2024, are subject to revised federal regulations (2 CFR Part 200), though awards to individuals are exempt from some requirements.
- No indirect costs or institutional overhead are included.
