Funding Amounts: Up to $300,000 available for one anticipated project lasting no more than 24 months

Summary: Supports assessment of aquaculture sites and large-scale bioextraction feasibility in New York’s Long Island Sound waters and embayments.

Key Information: An approved Quality Assurance Project Plan is required before environmental information collection or analysis.

    Description

NEIWPCC, in cooperation with the Long Island Sound Partnership and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), seeks an assessment of sites suitable for aquaculture across New York’s Long Island Sound waters and embayments. The project will examine whether large-scale, commercial bioextraction can provide lasting nitrogen reductions and improve water quality, informing the Nutrient Bioextraction Initiative’s research and management goals.

The study focuses on seaweed and ribbed mussels, which can be harvested in uncertified waters for potential non-food uses. Other shellfish may be considered in certified waters open to harvest. Work includes literature review, stakeholder interviews, suitability criteria, candidate-site identification and ratings, GIS mapping, and an overall feasibility assessment. A cost-benefit analysis of state or town aquaculture leasing programs is optional.
