Innovative Treatments in Disorders of Consciousness (ITDC) Grant supports researchers developing pilot data, trial infrastructure, and treatments to improve diagnosis and care for disorders of consciousness.
Funder: Neurocritical Care Society
Due Dates (Anticipated): June 2027 (LOI) | October 2027 (Full application, invitation only)
Funding Amounts: Up to $200,000 per year, maximum $400,000 over 2 years; approximately 2 awards
Summary: Supports prospective research generating pilot data, trial infrastructure, and innovative treatments for disorders of consciousness.
Key Information: U.S.-based nonprofit applicants must include at least one Mass General Brigham collaborator.
The Innovative Treatments in Disorders of Consciousness (ITDC) Grant supports bold, high-impact research advancing the diagnosis, understanding, and treatment of coma, vegetative state, and minimally conscious state. The Neurocritical Care Society’s Curing Coma® Campaign collaborates with Spaulding Rehabilitation through its Rehabilitation Outcomes Center (ROCS) to administer the program. It addresses high misdiagnosis rates, limited tools for detecting consciousness, and few effective treatments.
Projects should generate pilot data for larger studies, create infrastructure for prospective multicenter clinical trials, or evaluate biologically plausible treatments. Areas of interest include connectomics and circuit mapping, phenotyping and endotyping, recovery trajectories, biomarker validation, and machine learning for prognostication. Therapeutic research may explore novel or repurposed drugs and devices, including deep brain stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and vagus nerve stimulation. These topics are not exhaustive.
