Description
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) administers Safe Routes to School to help children in grades K–8 walk or bicycle to and from school safely. The program provides resources and expertise to make these trips safe, convenient, and fun. Its work includes encouragement activities, education programs, safety and infrastructure improvements, and coordination with local law enforcement and community agencies.
The program aims to increase walking and bicycling to school, improve children’s safety, and support health and physical activity. Traveling under children’s own power can also reduce roadway congestion and contribute to cleaner air compared with vehicle travel. NDOT established the statewide program in 2005, and its Safe Routes Partnership mission advances safe walking and rolling to school and in everyday life.
