    Description

New Interpretations is a Getty Foundation initiative that strengthens visitor-centered culture in art museums through gallery-based experiences, rigorous research, and network building for interpretation professionals. Launched in 2026, it supports museums and exhibiting arts nonprofits internationally, including non-collecting institutions. Interpretation can encompass text-based materials, multisensory experiences, interactive galleries, and collaborations with artists and communities.

The initiative funds interpretive planning, implementation, visitor research, and evaluation for temporary exhibitions and permanent collections. It also supports training, convenings, professional development, and information sharing. Priorities include experimentation, interdepartmental collaboration, practical responses to barriers to access, and approaches that advance museum practice. Getty will periodically convene grantees to share knowledge, and encourages applicants to include dissemination activities in their proposals.
