New Jazz Works is administered by Chamber Music America (CMA) and funded by the Doris Duke Foundation as a component of the Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles Project. It supports professional jazz ensembles based in the United States, its territories, and Indian country in creating, performing, and recording new music. The composer may be the ensemble leader or an individual member of the ensemble or collective.
The program connects commissioning with support for a work’s continued public life. Funding covers composition, rehearsals, premiere performances, subsequent performances or recording, and associated administration and promotion. Works must incorporate improvisation and may comprise one extended composition or shorter pieces forming a larger work. Performances must be accessible to general audiences, including through publicly viewable livestreams.
