This NIH R01 initiative supports research to improve healthcare and reduce health disparities among older adults aged 65 and above. Participating institutes are the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Nursing Research, and National Cancer Institute. Its three central interests are appropriate screening, diagnostic and clinical care guidelines; shared decision-making among older adults, caregivers and clinicians; and effective care coordination.
Supported approaches include descriptive studies, interventions, clinical trials, natural experiments, quality improvement, mixed methods and simulation modeling. Research may address outpatient, inpatient, emergency, home-based, long-term, transitional, palliative or end-of-life care, including telemedicine. Outcomes may include physical and mental health, quality of life, trust, autonomy, empowerment and safety. Clinical trials are optional.
