Description
This NIH R01 initiative supports development and testing of multidisciplinary, multi-level and/or multi-domain interventions addressing disparities in liver diseases and liver cancer. Participating institutes are the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and National Cancer Institute (NCI). Clinical trials are optional.
The program focuses on screening, prevention, treatment, management, and survivorship among U.S. populations experiencing health disparities. Relevant conditions include hepatitis B and C, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and steatohepatitis, chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. It encourages community-engaged interventions extending beyond individual behavior, awareness, or screening alone, including approaches addressing social determinants of health, protective factors, co-infections, substance use disorders, and chronic disease comorbidities. Early-stage risk reduction and natural experiments are also of interest.
