Description
The NIH Office of Disease Prevention and participating Institutes, Centers, and Offices support R01 research testing innovative approaches to implementing Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment or Prevention (SBIRT/P). SBIRT/P combines substance-use risk screening, brief conversations about harmful use, and referrals to treatment or preventive services. The program targets alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and misuse in adult NIH-designated populations experiencing health disparities.
Projects should prospectively test implementation strategies that overcome barriers to access, delivery, follow-up, and sustainability. Healthcare and community partnerships are strongly encouraged. Research may adapt SBIRT/P for different populations or settings, test scale-up outside traditional healthcare, address social barriers to referrals, or integrate interventions for multiple substances and co-occurring conditions.
