Description
Administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center program supports activities before and after school, on weekends, and during school breaks. Programs provide academic enrichment aligned with students’ needs, academic standards, and school-day instruction. They also offer opportunities in areas such as youth development, social and emotional learning, civic engagement, and health, while helping adult family members engage in their children’s education and pursue their own learning.
The program targets schools with high concentrations of economic and academic need. Community partnerships may bring mentoring, real-world learning, apprenticeships, and workforce development to students. Service learning, project-based learning, environmental literacy, and citizen science are among the approaches described by DPI.
