Summary: Supports student geoscience research in New Mexico, field-based geochronology, undergraduate mentorship, and educator field conference participation.
Key Information: Research applicants must attend a New Mexico institution and propose future work in New Mexico (adjacent states considered for geochronology).
The New Mexico Geological Society supports graduate and undergraduate geoscience research through Grants-in-Aid, the Frank E. Kottlowski Research Award, Cearley awards, and Lucille H. Pipkin Undergraduate Research Awards. Research should contribute significantly to understanding New Mexico geology, including graduate thesis or dissertation work and faculty-supervised undergraduate research leading to a thesis or report. Geoscience-centered interdisciplinary projects may also be considered.
The NMGS Scholarship Committee favors well-focused, scientifically significant investigations with achievable schedules and justified budgets, including innovative projects unlikely to receive conventional support. Cearley Geochronology Awards support field-based dating studies in New Mexico and adjacent states. Graduate Mentorship funding enables graduate researchers to employ and closely mentor undergraduates for a year. The wider program also recognizes student presentations and supports New Mexico educators attending the Fall Field Conference.
