Description
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) administers the Nonpoint Source Management Program to reduce water pollution from diffuse sources, including stormwater and land use activities. Unlike pollution originating at industrial or sewage treatment plants, nonpoint source pollution comes from many scattered sources. The program manages Federal Clean Water Act Section 319(h) grants through the Environmental Protection Agency, known as 319 Grants, and State Water-quality Assistance Grants, known as SWAG.
Supported work includes demonstrating and evaluating best management practices, reducing pollution in priority watersheds, treating impaired waters, and protecting groundwater. Green stormwater infrastructure and low impact development are also eligible. The 319 Grants additionally support public education and septic-to-sewer projects. Education funding prioritizes behavior change over purely informative education, including approaches such as community-based social marketing.
