Description
The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan supports youth-related programs and projects through its Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC). The council includes about 50 students and seven advisors from Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties. Permanently endowed funds from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation enable young people to learn about philanthropy and help direct funding toward local youth needs.
The program gives stronger consideration to seed funding for new, dynamic projects that demonstrate funding support from other organizations. Half of available funding is allocated to projects addressing youth needs identified through a needs assessment conducted every three years. Identified concerns include depression and mental health, stress, vaping and tobacco use, hygiene, body image, and a lack of local activities.
