Key Information: Fellows must reside at the University of Notre Dame for the full nine-month term.
The University of Notre Dame’s Medieval Institute offers this nine-month postdoctoral fellowship to junior scholars studying the history of medieval education, especially universities. Established through Abbot Astrik L. Gabriel’s bequest, it supports research using the Astrik L. Gabriel History of Universities Collection at the Hesburgh Libraries. Projects may involve completing book manuscripts or articles, preparing text editions, or developing new research directions in the history of education.
The collection includes scholarly books and journals, Gabriel’s notes on medieval colleges—particularly those in Paris—and data on students of Hungarian origin and students attending Hungarian universities. It also holds microfilms of approximately 2,000 medieval manuscripts, including cartularies, statutes, matriculation lists, and expense accounts. The fellowship provides time and resources to advance this research toward scholarly publication, without teaching responsibilities.
