The Franco Institute at the University of Notre Dame supports full-time humanities research by individual faculty in the College of Arts and Letters. Fellowships combine a semester free from teaching and service with research funding and a manuscript workshop involving an external reviewer. The program provides dedicated time for research and writing alongside opportunities to share and discuss work in progress.
The Institute takes a broad view of the humanities, encompassing languages, linguistics, literature, history, jurisprudence, philosophy, archaeology, comparative religion, ethics, and the history, criticism, and theory of the arts. Social science projects with humanistic content and methods also qualify. Projects must use interpretive methods and advance humanistic scholarship, with potential contributions to scholarship, the wider public, or both.
