Summary: Five PhD scholarships support art history and practice-based research in art or curating to develop these fields in Denmark.
Key Information: Applicants need a master’s degree before applying and Danish hosting and preliminary enrolment agreements.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation supports ambitious students pursuing research careers in art history and practice-based artistic research. The programme funds art history or art theory research before or after 1900, in Danish or international contexts, alongside practice-based research grounded in applicants’ artistic or curatorial practices. All projects must demonstrate relevance to the visual arts and to the research environment at the Danish enrolment and host institution.
Practice-based projects combine a written dissertation with an artistic work or curatorial examination. These elements develop in parallel and must be presented at the PhD defence as a coherent project. The artistic or curatorial practice must contribute to exploring the research question and developing new knowledge.
