Description
The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) Research Initiative funds research that advances the genetic counseling profession. Administered by the Research, Quality and Outcomes (RQO) Committee, the initiative supports the committee’s mission of demonstrating the value of genetic counseling and generating data for evidence-based practice. NSGC issues an annual request for proposals addressing a topic aligned with its strategic priorities, with the upcoming topic announced at the Annual Conference.
Funded projects have examined patient-provider communication under restrictive abortion policies, the financial impact and cost-effectiveness of genetic counselor-delivered testing services, and equitable access to genetic counseling. The 2026 project develops and evaluates an AI-driven patient-navigation tool to introduce hereditary risk and genetic counseling concepts, prepare patients for primary care conversations, and facilitate appropriate referrals.
