The New York State Department of Health will fund a Resource Center to help New York hospitals build sustainable capacity for high-quality, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, patient-centered medical and forensic care for sexual violence survivors of all ages. The program is administered through the Center for Community Health, Division of Family Health, Bureau of Perinatal, Reproductive, and Sexual Health.
The center will develop, implement, and evaluate statewide training and technical assistance, improve access to certified Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFEs), and strengthen collaboration and resource sharing. Activities include Department-approved SAFE curriculum and courses, preceptorship coordination, hospital staffing and quality-assurance support, a public website, and one or two conferences. In years two through five, the center must target at least 60 emergency-service hospitals annually, including rural emergency hospitals, for support developing self-sustaining on-site SAFE programs.
