The New York State Maritime Heritage Education Subgrant is a competitive program administered by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) through its State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Funded by the National Park Service’s National Maritime Heritage Grant Program, it supports public education that brings new and compelling maritime narratives to the public, particularly histories of Indigenous and other underrepresented communities. Projects outside those themes remain eligible.
Supported work includes collections interpretation and access, maritime heritage trails and areas, hands-on waterborne experiences, participatory history programs, traditional skills instruction, educational replicas, and minor improvements to existing educational facilities and exhibit spaces. Examples include interpretive signage, walking tours, podcasts, oral histories, story maps, exhibitions, lectures, and shipwright workshops.
