Summary: Supports Massachusetts efforts to eliminate sexual violence in correctional facilities through PREA-aligned uses of reallocated federal justice assistance funds.
The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Grant Program is managed by the Massachusetts Office of Grants and Research (OGR). It supports purposes aligned with PREA, the federal law enacted in 2003 to eliminate sexual violence in correctional facilities.
The program uses reallocated Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funds rather than a separate funding source. When a state is not in full compliance with PREA, the U.S. Department of Justice reallocates a portion of its JAG funding for PREA-aligned purposes. OGR serves as Massachusetts’ State Administering Agency for JAG and also manages the Commonwealth’s PREA reallocation.
