Description
The Alaska Office of History and Archaeology (OHA), within the Division of Parks & Outdoor Recreation, administers competitive, matching grants to preserve Alaska’s cultural heritage. Programs support local government historic preservation initiatives, rehabilitation of historic properties, maritime heritage preservation and education, and special historical commissions and statewide projects. OHA and the State Historic Preservation Office seek to protect Alaska’s archaeological, historic, and architectural resources while fostering community engagement in preservation.
Maritime Heritage grants support projects protecting historic maritime properties, collections, and traditional maritime skills. Other opportunities include Historic Preservation Fund grants for Certified Local Governments and occasional predevelopment and development grants for owners of historic properties. Supported work has included maritime preservation and education at Eldred Rock Lighthouse and predevelopment and rehabilitation at Seward Cable House.
