The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), within the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, administers this program for state, local, Tribal, and territorial prosecuting agencies. It supports qualified prosecutors serving as Special Attorneys under the National Fraud Enforcement Division or Criminal Division, or as Special Assistant United States Attorneys within a United States Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors may serve full-time or part-time on a case-by-case basis.
Funding also supports criminal investigators, analysts, forensic accountants, and other investigative support staff. Cross-designated personnel investigate and prosecute assigned fraud and other crimes committed by aliens within the United States and may also receive drug or human trafficking cases. The program seeks to strengthen investigative and prosecutorial capacity, improve collection and analysis of investigative information, expand intergovernmental coordination, and help jurisdictions counter gang and other criminal activity.
