Description
The Alabama State Department of Education’s Special Education Services (SES) Section administers Parent Training and Counseling Support as part of its Special Initiatives grants. The program funds Alabama local education agencies (LEAs) to help parents and guardians understand their child’s special needs, learn about child development, and acquire skills to support implementation of their child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Its goals are stronger parent-school partnerships and improved outcomes for children with disabilities.
Training may be universal for parents and guardians of children with disabilities or targeted to specific families’ needs. Targeted training may appropriately be included in a child’s IEP. The initiative also supports parent or guardian counseling when the child’s IEP Team determines it is necessary for the child to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE).
