Description
The Alabama State Department of Education’s Special Education Services (SES) Section offers Parent Training and Counseling Support through its FY 2027 Special Initiatives grants. The program strengthens positive partnerships between local education agencies (LEAs) and parents or guardians of school-age children with disabilities. It supports training that helps families understand their child’s special needs, learn about child development, and acquire skills to support implementation of their child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
LEAs should consider universal training for families of children with disabilities alongside targeted training for specific families. Targeted training may appropriately be included in a child’s IEP. The program also supports parent or guardian counseling when the child’s IEP Team determines it is necessary for a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Its goal is high-quality, relevant, useful support that improves children’s outcomes.
