Summary: Supports emerging pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine investigators conducting lung biology and pulmonary disease research.
Key Information: Fellows must have at least 75% protected research time and cannot have held comparable nationally competitive research awards.
The Parker B. Francis Fellowship Program, funded by the Francis Family Foundation, supports clinical and basic scientists transitioning from postdoctoral training toward independent careers in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. It combines mentored investigator development with research intended to advance treatments and cures for pulmonary disease. Awards are made to institutions on behalf of qualified postdoctoral fellows or newly appointed faculty members.
The program supports clinical, laboratory, and translational science focused on lung biology and lung disease. Appropriate approaches range from cellular and molecular studies to epidemiologic and clinical research involving human subjects. Bioethical research in pulmonary or critical care medicine is also encouraged, including studies of clinical trial ethics, end-of-life decisions, and resource allocation.
