Summary: Supports innovative research on pediatric alopecia areata to improve the lives of affected children, adolescents, and families.
Key Information: Applicants must hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent and be eligible to apply through their host institution.
The Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA) and National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) jointly support research that helps scientists establish or sustain programs focused on pediatric alopecia areata. This autoimmune skin disease causes hair loss, and nearly half of patients experience their first episode before age 20. Limited pediatric treatment options, substantial burdens on families, and unanswered research questions motivate the program’s focus on understanding disease and advancing therapeutic development.
Investigators with any innovative research idea are encouraged to apply. Priorities include disease mechanisms, epidemiology and natural history, pediatric-specific patient-reported outcomes, psychosocial and family burdens, and treatments or tools that support treatment decisions. Priority consideration goes to high-priority research questions and projects led by early-to-mid career principal investigators collaborating with senior mentors.
