    Description

The Penny Schwartz Student Travel Grant supports travel for a current student attending the African Studies Association (ASA) Annual Meeting. Established in 2009 by the ASA Women’s Caucus, the award honors Nancy “Penny” Schwartz, an active member of both the ASA and its Women’s Caucus, and celebrates her legacy of student mentorship.

The grant connects practical travel support for students with recognition of Schwartz’s contribution to the association’s community. It was made possible by a bequest from Dr. Nancy Schwartz and gifts from Drs. Judith Van Allen, Mary Osirim, Nwando Achebe, and Anita and Derrick Plummer. The award is presented annually at the ASA Women’s Caucus Lecture.
