Description
The South Dakota Department of Health’s Office of Lifespan Health administers the federally funded State Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP). It provides youth ages 10–19 with education on abstinence and contraception to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS. The program prioritizes youth aging out of foster care, experiencing homelessness, involved in the juvenile justice system, or living in under-resourced communities or areas with higher teen birth and STI rates.
PREP also develops skills for adulthood through healthy relationships, healthy life skills, and adolescent development. Optional subjects include financial literacy, parent-child communication, and education and career success. Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota’s REACH Program delivers the evidence-based programming under a contract awarded through a request for proposals.
