The Fisheries Society of the British Isles (FSBI) runs an annual competition for studentships supporting postgraduate study leading to a PhD. The programme funds four years of research in fields relevant to fish biology and the Society’s aims, including fisheries management and conservation. Projects concerned solely with shellfish are excluded. Normally, two studentships are awarded each year.
Supported research spans behaviour, ecology, evolution, genetics and conservation. Current projects include improving thermal-preference measurements, investigating habitat use by critically endangered flapper skate, and using genetic tools to inform cownose ray conservation. Applications are assessed by an independent committee of Council Members, with scientific excellence, feasibility, the applicant’s academic background, quality of science and the value of potential outputs central to selection.
