Mayo Clinic’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency in Rochester, Minnesota, prepares physicians for careers in private practice, research, or academic medicine. Training emphasizes the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disabilities and a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to helping patients achieve their maximum functional capacity, independence, and quality of life.
Residents gain balanced inpatient and outpatient experience across rehabilitation subspecialties, neurology, electromyography (EMG), and research. The curriculum includes extensive musculoskeletal medicine and ultrasound training, injection techniques, and management of disorders encountered in rehabilitation practice. Residents work with a varied patient population and a large staff of physiatrists, with access to experts in related medical and surgical specialties. Research training includes completing a project, often involving musculoskeletal ultrasound, disorder epidemiology, or new rehabilitation interventions.
