Pilot and Feasibility grants from the Alpha-1 Foundation support researchers testing new AAT deficiency hypotheses or methods to improve health, advance the search for a cure, and open new research directions.
Funder: Alpha-1 Foundation
Due Dates: September 25, 2026 (LOI) | February 12, 2027 (Full application, invitation only)
Funding Amounts: Up to $75,000 for up to one year

Key Information: Pharmaceutical companies, biotechs, and industry cannot apply or collaborate on proposals.
The Alpha-1 Foundation’s Pilot and Feasibility grant supports innovative research developing and testing new hypotheses or methods relevant to alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). Part of the Foundation’s 2026–2027 In-Cycle Grants Award Program, it aims to improve the health of people with AAT deficiency and advance the search for a cure. Proposed work must generate or test hypotheses and include sufficient preliminary data to justify support.
The Foundation’s broader research mission encompasses basic, translational, and clinical research into Alpha-1-related lung and liver disease, as well as ethical, legal, and social issues. Pilot and Feasibility awards are intended to establish new research directions that lead to applications for further funding, rather than continue programs begun under other grant mechanisms.
