Key Information: Fellows must work fully on-site in Charlottesville, Virginia, and teach one course each academic year.
The Carter G. Woodson Institute at the University of Virginia supports early-career scholars working in African American and African Diasporic Studies across the humanities and social sciences. Research may address the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and the wider Diaspora, without being limited to those regions. Fellows hold the title of Research Associate and Lecturer.
The residential program supports manuscript development within an interdisciplinary community of scholars. Alongside research and travel support, fellows exchange works in progress through regular manuscript workshops, contribute to teaching in the Department of African American and African Studies, and share their research with the University community at public events. Preference is given to applicants whose research is substantially complete, allowing maximum time to finish manuscripts during the fellowship.
