Description
NSF’s Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to scientists seeking independent research support and training beyond their graduate education. The program has a single focus: the intersection of artificial intelligence and biological sciences to strengthen and safeguard biotechnology innovations. It supports AI approaches to biological systems that generate new knowledge with potential technological applications.
Candidates with experience in AI, biology, or both propose cross-training to develop deep competence in both fields. Research and training should broaden disciplinary perspectives through collaboration with sponsoring scientists and appropriate host institutions. Proposers are encouraged to leverage existing biological data and infrastructure, including Biofoundries, Programmable Cloud Labs, Manufacturing USA Institutes, and NEON. The goal is to develop AI-literate biological scientists whose discoveries advance biotechnology, the U.S. economy, and the public good.
