Funding Amounts: Up to $5,000 (≤400 sq ft gardens) or up to $9,500 (>400 sq ft gardens or food forests ≥1,000 sq ft); project period up to 12 months.
Summary: Supports the creation and expansion of community gardens in Prince George’s County, MD, to advance regenerative practices and local food systems aligned with the Climate Action Plan.
Key Information: Projects must be in Prince George’s County (excluding City of Bowie); applications must be submitted at least 8 weeks before the project start date.
Description
This mini grant program, managed by the Chesapeake Bay Trust in partnership with Prince George’s County, funds both the creation of new community gardens and the expansion of existing ones within Prince George’s County, Maryland (excluding the City of Bowie). The program’s primary objectives are to strengthen local food systems, promote regenerative and sustainable gardening practices, and advance the county’s Climate Action Plan. Projects must demonstrate significant community engagement, environmental stewardship, and sustainable land management, including practices such as soil health improvement, native plantings, and community outreach.
Eligible projects may include communal gardens, private plots within a community garden, food forests, or community orchards. All funded gardens must be accessible to the community, employ regenerative agriculture techniques, and contribute to community resilience, food security, and environmental education.
