The California Walnut Board’s Production Research Program supports research addressing the walnut industry’s orchard production challenges. Administered by the Board’s Production Research Committee and funded through crop assessments, it directs research toward industry needs and both applied and long-term benefits for growers and handlers. Each year, the program solicits proposals from University of California, USDA Agricultural Research Service, California State University, and other institutional research partners.
Research spans variety and rootstock breeding, plant pathology and nematology, entomology, and orchard management. Orchard management includes irrigation, nutrition, tree canopy management, weed control, orchard floor management, and tree physiology, growth, and development. Most projects run for multiple years so findings can be repeated and refined across different regions and orchard conditions.
