Description
Promising Young Writers is a National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) student writing awards program designed to stimulate and recognize eighth-grade students’ writing talents and emphasize the importance of writing skills. Students submit writing responding to an annual prompt developed by the program’s advisory committee, with educators submitting nominations on their behalf.
The 2027 prompt, “Becoming Good Ancestors,” invites students to consider how their choices, relationships, and actions shape the world inherited by future generations. Responses may explore ancestral lessons, community responsibilities, cultural traditions, or actions toward a better world. Students may use any preferred style or genre, including expository, persuasive, narrative, descriptive, or creative writing. The program encourages authentic personal voice, creativity, and perspective.
