The Franco Institute’s Public Fellowship supports publicly engaged scholarship by individual University of Notre Dame faculty working in any discipline in the College of Arts and Letters. It funds scholarly or creative activity integral to a faculty member’s academic area that creates knowledge about, for, and with diverse publics and communities. The program follows principles of public scholarship articulated by organizations such as Imagining America and Humanities Without Walls.
Supported work should contribute to the public good and produce artifacts of public and intellectual value. Applicants must explain how their projects align with these goals, with clear scholarly aims, appropriate sources and methods, and meaningful contributions to scholarship, society, or both. Collaborative projects are eligible, but fellowships are awarded to individual researchers rather than teams.
